Introspections on Writing Projects

Have you ever had a story concept you thought would be super awesome, so started writing it, but then halfway through you just are like “Damn I really should have thought this through what am I going to do now”.
That’s me with two projects right now.  I have one fanfic, and one original story I’ve just been stuck on haha.  Well, the original story, I am not suuuuper stuck on:  I just have spurts of wanting to write it, having writers block, getting out of writer’s block, but then just not wanting to write it again.  I always think this is a bad thing, but then at the same time I’m also like well if this is my writing process, no need to push things.  At the same time though, I really want to be done with the story so I can go through the 2nd draft rewrites and start casting and producing the project XD

With the fanfic, I just noticed a few days ago I had a chapter I never posted, but had fully written!  That was crazy, I had never done that before!  It’s a cute gimmick of an idea for Final Fantasy VI, but so far all I really have is a cat and mouse chase between characters.  But I really don’t want to leave it unfinished, so I may just wrap it up in two or three chapters…once I figure out what I want to happen next.

It’s a weird limbo state of not quite writers block, and not quite motivated enough to write those particular stories.  And yet, I have a lot of passion for the original project, at least, but I just don’t feel like writing it.  I think it partially has to do with my brain being elsewhere and wanting to focus on other projects, too though XD

If you want to check out the fan fiction, you can read it here.  And, if you have any ideas after reading it, let me know!

  1. A mental break is never a bad thing. I definitely have nights where I just don’t feel like trying to write. If I push myself through it, I won’t have any fun and the writing will come out poorly.

If you don’t have a deadline, no need to rush it. Rest up with something non-stressful. If you have passion for it, like you said, you’ll want to write again soon.

  2. Hello. I’m Haerin, and I stumbled onto your site through the Reader.

I’m also trying to write a novel (an original one, in my case), but since I’m terrified of later realising (like you) that I didn’t think it through, I’m still at the pre-drafting stage. Or rather, I’m trying to figure out what exactly it is that I want to write.

I think it’s helpful to make two lists: one list of things you definitely want to see in your story, and another of things you want to avoid putting in it at all costs. It’s a crude method, but it’s a starting place. I’m on the latter list, and when I’m done with it, I’ll move on to the former.

You know Final Fantasy VI? What do you think of the music of the Final Fantasy series? I’m a huge fan! Are you a musician, or just a listener?

    1. Hello!

I really like that idea. I do one somewhat similar when I get writers block: I ask myself a lot of questions, then answer them and it helps get my creative juices flowing again. I’m going to try your method and see how that goes!

Oh yeah, I’m a major Final Fantasy fan. I adore the music. Final Fantasy VI and IV are my top two favorite soundtracks, but FFVI is my favorite Final Fantasy of all time and Celes is my favorite character from any media. I both listen, and am a musician, but I really need to get back on the ball with the music making haha. Right now I’m helping out on a Final Fantasy I collaborative album, so that’s been keeping me busy!

      1. Crystal, we are going to get along swimmingly!

VI and IX are probably the soundtracks I like best overall from Final Fantasy, but VII has a special place in my heart as I adore the story—and of course, it has ‘One-Winged Angel’. The instrumental version of ‘Suteki da ne’ is my favourite track from the entire FF series, though.

I’m a fervent listener who’s only just getting around to being a musician. I don’t play any instruments, and neither do I sing, so I’ll be using a DAW to compose. Learning new software is slow work, but I can’t wait to make my own music.

I wish you the best of luck in your musical endeavours!

  3. IX has an amazing soundtrack. I’ve never listened to it in it’s entirity, but eery piece I’ve heard, I love from it 😀 One-Winged Angel is so great! And I love any version of Suteki da Ne, that and Melodies of Life are my two favorite Final Fantasy songs with words to them.

All I do right now is sing and arrange a cappella arrangements of songs, but I really want to get into composing music. Good luck using a DAW – I’ve tried a few times and haven’t been able to wrap my head around using midi, and may try again soon but also am going to try and get a few inexpensive instruments and mess with them too and just…see where that takes me XD when you start making music, definitely point them my way, I’d love to hear your stuff!

    1. Thank you for your kind words! I think you’re very lucky to be able to sing and play instruments. I regret not learning how to do either when I was a child.

I’ll keep an eye out for more of your music!

  4. I wish I had learned how to play an instrument as a child too, but I figure no time like the present haha. Now to just actually get to learning an instrument, I’m hoping to do that starting next year!
