Piano Playing + Music Update

It’s been 3 months of playing keyboard, I believe?  I’ve lost track of time, but figured it’s about time for another update!
Mainly, I realize I need to start just arranging things to get better at piano.  Like, doing warm ups and stuff is fine, but when I was just doing warm ups it wasn’t really interesting to me:  I got bored, not in a way that made me want to stop playing by any means, but in a way more like “I want to keep playing, but can’t figure out what to play”.  After getting my computer back, and being able to record music though, I have a lot more fun playing sections for arrangements!  It makes me think more of how to add movement, and dynamics.  Like, as an example, there was one song I was working on that I just recorded a very simple chord progression for, but when I went to record vocals over it, it just sounded so bland and uninteresting to me.  So, I went to re-record the track, only with more dynamic playing (aka, playing with both hands, instead of just playing with my left) and the difference was night and day.  I wanted to share it here today, but I’ll be releasing the track as a whole later in March so…you’ll just hear it then 😉

On that note, I’ve been working on so many things.  Like I literally have about six project waiting in the wings, and need to record vocals for them.  It annoys me a bit with my mind set sometimes, because I listen to some of my arrangements with like, just an acoustic sound and my brain goes I need more stuff in here for it to sound interesting ugh” so I constantly have to keep on telling myself that it’s perfectly ok to just use a piano, or a piano, strings, and minor percussion.  I have to realize that doing that folksy acoustic stuff is a specific style, and not only that, but it’s a style that I really enjoy doing.  It’s a style that I see other cover artists do also, so why feel like it’s not enough doing the style I truly enjoy doing?  And that thought got me thinking last night:  I have a lot of original tracks that I never released because they were all a cappella, so why not you know, actually release them this year as an EP?  I think I’m actually going to go through with it this year!  I set a goal to release original music to sell every year but have always chickened out.  But this year, now that I’m doing bolder things, like launching my patreon and recording myself on camera, why not go all the way and release my music as well?  Worst case scenario is people won’t buy it, but just having it sit on my laptop where no one can hear it is a lot worse of a fate for it, in my opinion.  How will people hear it if it’s not out there to be heard?  I have album art already made for it last year, so I think I’m going to commission an acquaintance of mine to master the tracks for me, and possibly mix another that I’ve had the raws for years also just sitting on my computer.  I guess 2017 is just my year to take risks, because I’ve usually stopped myself in the past but this year I’m like no do it do it!

This piano update just turned into an overall music update XD I guess all I can say is this:  Here’s hoping I get everything done I want to get done this March!  I’m going to set a goal to start uploading two videos every month instead of my one, so fingers crossed I’ll be able to do that and get a consistent upload schedule!

I May Have a Problem…

I’m getting virtual instrument obsessed!

You know when I was like “Screw virtual instruments because I can’t use them I’ma get all the real ones and show them!”
Now that I have a keyboard that can bypass my accessibility issues, I just want all the virtual instruments rotfl.  So glad I got those 1 dollar VSTs on sale on a whim, because otherwise I would have never found SONiVox plug ins.  They’re all such great quality!  Even the cheaper ones.  I bought 2 that were on sale today (part of my problem rotfl) and to my surprise, they’re fully accessible, even without the keyboard!  I can go through every instrument preset, and then play them on either my keyboard or computers midi keyboard function in Reaper.  I prefer playing on my keyboard, because I have a lot more of a note range on there, but it’s just so nice to be able to download these and use them without any problems!  My strings VST is SONiVox also, and after I got that to work, it’s accessible in the same way too.  They all sound so gorgeous, I’m definitely a new SONiVox loyal fan!  The two I got today are a base and an acoustic guitar.  I listened to a sample of the actual acoustic guitar they’re sampling on the VST, and it sounds really close to the actual guitar, I’m shocked at it’s quality, considering it’s price point.  With some EQ tweaking, it’ll be good to use in covers!

They have a drum companion as well, which I’m a little hesitant to buy at its full price even though I’m 95% it will work the same way as the others.  Just the cautious person in me shining through, I guess.  I’ll wait for it to go on sale and buy it, since it seems SONiVox VSTs go on sale a lot – the drums are on sale right now, but at 88 dollars, which I’m going to put that amount of money towards buying Pianissimo since my trial is up today.  So drums will just have to wait a bit longer~ but once I get those, I’ll be pretty set!  Well, maybe I’ll get woodwinds, and an orchestra from SONiVox too…see, I have a problem!  But I’m just so stoked to be able to buy and download things and be able to use them like anybody else can!  Squeeee!!
On that note, my next cover will be using the SONiVox strings.  I like to add lyrics to character themes and video game themes as well as what I do, and this particular theme is one I’ve had lyrics written for years.  I’m so excited to be able to make this cover, it’s legit a dream come true.  Overall, I’m just so excited to be able to make music like I’ve always wanted to, this keyboard has been such a blessing ;_; best Christmas gift ever!

Speaking of music, if you missed it on Tuesday, I’ve launched a Patreon page.  Any pledges I get from this page will go directly to making my music, and producing tracks and videos for my YouTube Channel.  If you could share the link around, that would be awesome!  You’re under no obligation to pledge:  I’ll still be releasing stuff on YouTube for free.  Think of this more as me being a busker, and patreon being my tip jar.  If you become a patron, you’d be helping me buy hardware and software to further my music journey, like the virtual instruments I’m gushing about on this post!  No matter what, always appreciate you guys reading my blog and checking out my covers, I’m just so grateful for all of your support.
Don’t know how to end this post haha.  I guess with this:  I’m off to make more music!

Lufia and the Fortress of Doom Prologue Piano and Vocal Cover, And my Patreon Launch!

Lufia and the Fortress of Doom Prologue Piano and Vocal Cover – YouTube

Late post today, because I’ve been working for the past two days on putting this together.  I’m both excited and nervous to be posting a video with me on camera (and my hands on camera lol) but I’m more excited.  Man, what a rush I got just by knowing that I put all of this work into arranging, and producing this video!  My amazing friend Kevin edited the video for me, and my Mom helped me with makeup, camera placement, and looking more animated while singing.  She also double checked the video for me.  All in all, this was a group effort, and I’m so blessed to have such supportive people in my life to help me out with this stuff when they really don’t have to 😀
This is a video of a lot of firsts:  It’s also me playing the piano, if those hands moving on the keyboard aren’t an indication haha.  I learned a lot of things about recording an instrument being played while doing this, one of many things is if you have to, record different sections in chunks.  You have no idea how many times I messed up, and started over again, all while getting uber frustrated.  Imagine how easy it would have been just for me to do one section, then another, then another?  I wound up having to do that anyway, so next time if I have to I’m just going to go that route instead of playing the entire thing all at once, possibly messing up, then starting over again and letting my rage grow and grow and…ahem!  Anywaaaay~

Along with a new video launch, I also launched a Patreon page!  This too was both exciting and nerve-wracking.  If you could share this page around, I’d greatly appreciate it!  Of course I’ll still be doing videos for free, and sharing them with you all, but becoming a patron will allow me to produce more polished, quality videos, like the one above.  Plus, it’ll give me the chance to pay my amazing artist friends to do the things for me that they do for free, cuz they’re awesome XD

How do you like the video?  The cover?  If there’s anything I can do to improve my video quality, please let me know!

The Overwelmingly Exciting World of Midi and Music Production

Now that I have my computer back, I’ve been able to start working on music to full capacity again.  On my Mom’s computer, it would crash as soon as I tried to add reverb, so I just did some basic mixes for the holidays on it.  But now, I can install some virtual instruments I bought on sale during the holidays, which I  was really excited for.  My track record with downloading, and being able to use virtual instruments is very slim:  I always download something as a demo to see if it’s accessible first, but this particular plug in was on sale for 1 dollar so I was like “I don’t care if it’s accessible or not, I’ll make it work!” I got to on a sale like this, so tried them both.  One is called Xpand 2:  An overall virtual instrument, with 2300 instruments and sounds to choose from.  I downloaded it, opened the VST window and…nothing happened dun dun dun! So I got bummed, and went to regroup.

Then a thought struck me.  I went “Wait a minute, I got this to try and use with my keyboard to see if it will work, so let me plug in my keyboard as a midi controller to see if it plays” and low and behold, that worked!  I was, and still am, so stoked!  I can use a virtual instrument now, when I’ve never been able to because the menus were un-navigatable!  I tried this with all of my other virtual instruments, and it works for everything!  Well, everything but a drum one, but I haven’t activated that yet so I’m guessing that’s why it refuses to work, and I haven’t committed time to sorting that out yet.
The other VST I got from that 1 dollar sale was an orchestra strings set, with 7 GB of string samples.  That one, I haven’t been able to try yet, but not because of anything midi related:  It’s because the dang thing doesn’t load, and crashes Reaper whenever I try to load it, and I can’t figure out why!  So I’m trying to sort that out also, but Xpand 2 is more than enough to hold me over until then.

When I was playing my keyboard, and actually recording its internal sound, I realized something:  My keyboard sounds like basic midi garbage when I record it rotfl.  I was like nuuuuu!!!  So, I did some research, and downloaded a VST called Pianissimo, which apparently   is the most well-known, and well used piano virtual instrument out there.  I’m not surprised, because it sounds amazing!  It’s a breeze to mix, and I love going through all of the different piano sounds.  If you need something to record piano with, I’d highly recommend this for your virtual instrument option:  it can also be used super easily with my keyboard as a midi controller, and plays right out the box.  I have it as a 14 day free trial right now, so I’m just playing as many arrangements as I can think of wanting to cover with it, then saving them as .wav before my trial is up haha.  It’s price point is really good for its quality, only 68 USD, so when my trial is up, I’m going to definitely pick up a copy!  I mean, I could probably get it for free through some…wink wink channels, but I really want all of my music production software to be legit, and 68 dollars isn’t a bad price point at all for what you’re getting in that package.

Speaking of price, did I mention the two plug ins I got for 1 dollar have a market price of 100 USD?  I was shocked to find that out too, and when I first saw the sale I was convinced that I somehow would be charged some super high extra fee but nope:  it just was a 1 dollar sale.  I got it from Plugin Boutique, which is a really good site to buy any plug in or VST you could be looking for.  Activating, and downloading the software is really easy, and they have a page of deals they are offering (which are all fantastic if you have the money).  Real talk:  I was told about the 1 dollar sale on the strings VST by a fellow VGM musician on Twitter, and that’s the only reason I gave this site a chance.  So glad I did, because I love the site so much, and definitely will be using it for any VST needs I have in the future!

Back to the midi controller, though.  My only complaint with it is, I don’t have a visual display of what instruments are where.  Xpand 2 has categories, but the manual doesn’t list any categories’, so I’m just stuck arrowing through every instrument one by one on my keyboards keypad until I find something I want to use.  From what I’ve heard from other blind musicians, this is the norm for using a virtual instrument with a midi controller, and I’m blessed that I can use the VST at all with this extra hardware so I just have to get used to the process.  I figured my plan will be to play the section I want, then go through the VST after recording and pick the sound I want to save time and streamline my production process.
I love using my keyboard as a midi controller!  It’s so easy to lay down sections, and I don’t have to worry about lining up instruments:  I just play them in the right tempo, and I’m good to go.  It’s both exciting, and overwhelming:  overwhelming because now I’m afraid once I release something with instruments in it, it won’t be good enough, or sound too scarce or something.  But, pushing those negative thoughts away and just working on things, as is my tendency~

Speaking of working on things, I have my first piece done!  Well, it’s a cover, not an original work.  But either way, it’s going to be a number of firsts for me.  The first time I’m playing my piano in a cover (I’m terrified to post it because of that) and the first time I’m recording video for a cover that will be on my channel (doubly terrified because of that, am so tempted to back out of doing it but no no push through Crystal rawr!).  Like I mentioned above, I’m so scared that this arrangement is too bare bones:  it’s just me playing piano and vocals, and at times I feel like it’s bland but I did my best in the mix to set it up to sound more rounded.  When I listen to it, I like it, but in the back of my mind I’m like “Is this good enough to post?”.  Whether it is or not, I’m going to post it.  After all, can’t improve unless you put yourself out there!

OK, I’m done with this rambly post.  Had a lot of exciting things I wanted to talk about, so that’s why I bounce all over the place in this XD
But what about you guys, have any exciting news lately?

2/9 Shadow Collaboration

This is the collaboration I was asked to do after the Ori and the Blind Forest one.  Not much to say about this one:  I had never heard the song before doing this, and when I was listening to sing it it really grew on me because it’s pretty catchy.  Not sure what the game footage is from either, so if anybody knows, please let me know in the comments!  Hope you enjoy.  This month, I’ll be posting stuff on my actual channel again, woo!

My Computer is Back Yaaaay!!!!!

On Sunday, I had a bit of a scare with my Mom’s computer where it wasn’t charging for a while, so for the next 2 days I didn’t use it.  I wound up just not going on any computers, because I was afraid I would wreck someone else’s to be honest haha.  Not gonna lie, it was actually really relaxing to not be on a computer for a few days!  I went a little stir crazy sure, but my brain felt like it was freed up and I had a lot of creative ideas going through my head.  Would I go through a few days without a computer again?  Probably not, but it was an interesting experience nevertheless.  A while ago I ordered a new cord, and got it today because I figured I could try to just plug it in and see if my computer booted up, then if it didn’t boot up go from there.  Never had to get that far, because plugging in the new cord worked!  Who knew the only problem was my cord dying? I’m not surprised because it was pretty bent out of shape when I looked at it.  I’m going to order another cord just as backup, but EEE I’m so excited to have my computer back!  Now I can go back to making music, and install the drivers for my keyboard on here!  I think I’m going to wait on installing my music VSTs just in case something else goes wrong, and let my computer regroup before doing any heavy lifting on it like mixing, but AHHH AHHH I’m so excited to be writing my blog post on here, instead of a borrowed computer!
I got an Acer Cloudbook as a backup, but so glad I don’t have to use it now!  Fingers crossed nothing else wrong happens on my computer, can’t wait to start creating and using it again!!

In other news, I picked up a lot of musical stuff!  I really wanted a hand drum, and went to Guitar Center to pick up a djembe drum.  I was thinking of ordering one, but figured I’d be going up to where Guitar Center was and could just get it there.  It looks so cool too, and I have some covers that I’ve been wanting to do that are more tribal/folk sounding that I know it will sound perfect on!  It has a great sound.

Picked up my Yamaha Recorder also, and the sound of it is gorgeous!  I got a 1 dollar recorder from Dollar Tree that sounds like garbage by comparison, like even not playing the Yamaha well, it sounds so beautiful.  Also know the first thing I’m going to use that in after I practice a bit, super stoked to finally have it!

Let’s see, what else?  I got my acoustic foam as well, and am going to be DIYing the portable recording booth for my microphone.  I realized last week that the pillow fort I was making really wasn’t doing me any good, so I’m anxious to see what my mic with the foam around it will do.  I got 24 panels, so I can use more if I need to around the room, but really I just got those for extra in case and am going to make one box to fit around my mic.  Can’t wait to try it out after building it, I’m going to do a back to back sound test to see how much of a difference it makes!

All in all, the last few days have been pretty good.  Going to recoop after such a long week, but next week I’m going to start cracking on all of the covers I’ve been wanting to work on with this computer.  EEEE can’t wait!  Time to go catch up on all of my blogs, so many notification emails in my inbox lol.

Baked Good of the Month, Chocolate Chip Cookies (sort of)

The baked good I made this month was chocolate chip cookie…muffin…pie…things!  Ok, so they were supposed to be chocolate chip cookies, but they didn’t’ turn out that way.  They tasted like chocolate chip cookies (were really delicious) but the shape wasn’t at all like a cookie for either batch I made.  So, story time!

When I bake things, I use a toaster oven.  For a multitude of reasons:  It saves on my gas, and all in all is easier for me to use.  I want to upgrade to a table top oven, so I can make full batches and bigger things but that’ll come later.  Because I bake in a toaster oven, I have to make smaller batches of things, and it’s hard for me to put the little tray in while the oven is warm without it being crooked.  So, I try to not have to do that, and one of my tricks is using little serving trays, or pie tins, or these cute little six count toaster oven muffin tins I have.  I figured, “I’ll just put my cookies in the muffin tin, no problem!” and loaded a ton of dough in (I like thick cookies).  Not only did it take three times as long to bake, but my cookies rose into muffins!  I didn’t know that could happen, since I had no baking powder in it and only used baking soda.  But when I thought about it, it makes sense because the cookies spread when baking, and when they had nowhere to spread out their natural way to go is up! but it was cool finding out that they could rise like that, I wasn’t expecting it at all!  I creamed the sugar with an electric mixer, which my Mom went “Isn’t that just for making a cake?” so I think the air in the creaming process can make the cookies rise if you put them in something like a muffin tin, or cake tin.  The consistency the day of is like a muffin, but letting them set overnight makes them taste like those really delicious cookie bars you can buy from those Nestle Tollhouse stands in the mall, so good!  I assume it’s how those cookie cakes are made, too:  it has a cookie texture, while being doughy and thick and really tasty.  So although I didn’t wind up making cookies with that batch, I learned how to make cookie bars!

The second batch, I made in a nine inch pie tin.  I thought I spaced out the cookies enough, but since I like thick cookies, I had big globs of dough not spaced far enough apart.  This batch cooked a lot faster than the cookie muffins/bars, (about fifteen minutes) but when I pulled them out, they had all merged into this giant, nine inch cookie.  So, once again, something different coming out of a cookie haha.  It was like those giant Pizza Hut cookies you can get, so I took a pizza cutter and sliced it into pie slices.  This ginormus cookie had the consistency of a cookie, really crispy on the edges, while being really gooey on the inside.  The day after, they got to a really soft cookie, the kind I love!

So all in all, a baking success!  I love those “mistakes” that turn into something completely new, it was really fun discovering all of these things that I could make, just by mishaps happening.  Now I know what to do differently next time:  I read another recipe that said to space the cookies 3 inches apart for bigger cookies, and to spoon them out in a ¼ cup measurement.  In a toaster oven that’d probably make about four cookies at a time, but I’m used to that so no big deal.  It’s funny though, the recipe said it made 24 cookies, and I’m assuming it meant Chips Ahoy sized cookies, because with the size of cookie I like, I got about ten cookies.  I like this recipe a lot, but for the size of cookie I like to make at home I think I’ll switch to a bigger batch recipe.  I’ll probably get 20 cookies out of a recipe for 40, I really like big cookies ok!  If I wanted a tiny little thing to munch on, I’d go buy a pack of Chips Ahoy:  Not gonna spend all of that time making homemade cookies, and not having them be ginormus and indulgent and delectable!

That was my baking adventure for this month. Not sure if I’ll make anything else (I probably will because we’re stocking up on flour soon) but I’m excited I made cookies, because I’ve been wanting to for a long time.  Next I want to either make thumbprint or oatmeal raisin cookies, I haven’t decided yet.  Ooooh, or I could smoosh oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip together and make oatmeal raisin chocolate chip bars, yum!  Baking cookies was really fun, and really easy.  Can’t wait to try making more!

YouTube and Music Update

Now that I more or less have my anxieties about recording myself on video singing done with, I want to move on to working through other things via camera.  The two things I really want to work on is actually talking on cam, like in vlog format, and being able to add facial expressions and be more animated while singing.  For the ladder, I think it’s fine to not look animated when all you’re doing is a lot of “oos” and “ahs”, but with songs that have lyrics, I really want to look like I’m invested in the song.  It’s frustrating though, because every video I’ve looked at says look at yourself in the mirror and practice, but I can’t do that and haven’t found any alternatives.  I thought of recording demos on camera and sending it for advice, but not sure how that would help unless I know someone who could give me pointers on how to perform a song with more than my voice.  This is when I wish some sort of acting class was in my area!  Though I really just want to know about how to perform a song, I think it’s something I need some one on one coaching with, and I just can’t wrap my head around being able to find some help, other than like I said shooting camera footage and asking for advice and hoping who I ask knows a little about performing with facial expressions.

I found one interesting tid bit that I am probably going to try, where it was you make a character for yourself while singing the song by reading the lyrics beforehand and putting yourself in the characters shoes.  Also, staging what you’ll be doing before performing the song as well:  I know for some things, I’ll just be playing an instrument, but when it’s just me sitting and singing I’d like to have something to look like I’m invested in the song because that’s been a chronic issue for me, even back when I did live gigs.  SO my new goal since I will be back on the saddle of YouTube this month is to work on those things.  In the back of my head, I always say “Just don’t put yourself on camera because of those issues” but then I realize that so many YouTubers started off by being awkward, and maybe meh looking while doing their videos, but they only learned by putting themselves out there, and having an audience that gave them critiques, and an audience that they were accountable to so they were more likely to want to up their quality of content.  I guess since I actually want to upgrade my performances and quality, I’ve gotten to that point too!  Only took a year of YouTubing XD

For the vlogging, it’s weird because I used to podcast and didn’t have a problem talking there.  But with the camera on me, it’s a whole other animal, and nerves tend to get me to stammer and stumble.  I can always edit things out, sure, but I tried that on a test video and it’s really tedious and annoying, so I’d rather just do things in one take, then if I want to talk more, stop that and do another take.  Because having to go through like an hour of footage because I just kept on talking isn’t something I’d like to do. And, since I would rather not put my friend who would be editing stuff for me through the torture of me rambling, if I vlog I think I’d do that multi take format, and write down an outline of what I want to say.  On my test footage I didn’t have an outline, and it showed because I just was talking with a lot of ums and ers and it was so awkward XD  As I did different takes it got easier, so that’s why I think an outline to bounce off of would work best for me if I do vlogs.

But I’m excited!  Next week is when I’m getting all of my audio equipment, and I’m probably going to go to Guitar Center and see what hand drums they have there, and hopefully I can grab one to drag home.  With that, I’d have a whole mini percussion section I’ve been wanting, and with the keyboard, I’d be good to go!  I got some virtual instrument VSTs that were on sale for a dollar (they’re usually 100) and one has strings in it, the other an array of instruments.  I can use my keyboard as a midi controller, so I plan to do that with the virtual instruments, and hope it works well enough to just be able to flip through the different instruments with my keyboards keypad and play them on my keyboard.  I’ve tried VSTs in the past, but on a computer their accessibility factor has not been very good.  So I’m hoping with a piece of  hardware, where clicking with a mouse won’t be a factor, I’ll be able to use them to the extent of switching instruments with the keyboards keypad and using them, then mixing them with effects on my DAW.  I was sooooo excited to find those two VSTs for such a steal, I was like “I don’t care if they are accessible or not, they are a dollar so I will buy them and use them” haha.  I need my computer fixed before doing that, but I have my keyboard until then so nbd~

After picking up a drum, the only other physical instruments I really, really want are an ocarina and a mountain dulcimer.  The ocarina because Legend of Zelda, come on (I also think it’s overall just a beautiful sounding woodwind, as is the recorder) and the mountain dulcimer, because it’s from what I’ve read, the easiest string instrument to play, but once you learn it you can do complex stuff with it.  It also sounds so beautiful and folksy, and really fits my aesthetic of Celtic-folk style that I love!  An ocarina is very inexpensive, so I’ll be picking one up this month.  A mountain dulcimer of good quality is a bit more pricy, so I’ll be buying it a bit later.  Really happy that my one-woman band is starting to come together though!  So cloooose, just got to pick up some things to get the ball rolling woot woot!

That was a lot longer of an update then I expected haha.  I’m just so excited February  is here, because I can finally start arranging covers on my own again, only this time the way I’ve wanted to with actual instruments!  I know it won’t be super easy, as I’ve seen from singing along and playing piano to some arrangements I’ve been hashing out, but I’m ready for the challenge.  I’m really excited to grow as a musician this year, and onward!
